In 1956 Aston Martin began development of the all-new DB4, which debuted at the London Motor Show in 1958. Not only did it set the tone of Aston Martin design for years to come, the DB4 also introduced an updated engine designed by Tadek Marek, whose name became synonymous with the marque’s engineering and performance excellence. The 3,670-cc DOHC engine was entirely constructed of aluminium and produced 240 bhp in standard tune with twin SU carburettors. Most important, the new 3.7-litre six-cylinder engine provided a platform for further development and continued with various displacements and power ratings through to 1972.

Aston Martin turned to Carrozzeria Touring for its Superleggera “superlight” body design, comprising a lightweight yet strong framework of small-diameter tubes dressed in aluminium panels. The chassis, designed by Harold Beach, was both simpler and more rigid than that of its predecessors, using a new pressed-steel frame. Four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes matched the car’s impressive top speed of over 140 mph. The DB4 claims the distinction of being the first production car capable of sprinting from 0–100 mph and back down to zero in less than 30 seconds. It is fair to say, then, that the DB4 placed Aston Martin back on equal footing with its Italian counterparts from Ferrari and Maserati.

Chassis No: DB4/233/R was first registered in February 1960 to British Petroleum (BP Trading Ltd) and retained by Aston Martin Works for oil testing and engine development. A comprehensive history file accompanies the car including important documentation relating to the testing much of which was carried out by Tadek Marek himself. Tadek Marek sold the car to his brother-in-law who continued to enjoy the car.

Boasting extensive competition history this stunning DB4’s specification includes; Original engine bored to 4.2 litres with steel conrods and Cosworth pistons. Fully balanced and uprated clutch assembly. Fitted with triple 45 DCOE Webbers, C spec cams and large inlet and exhaust cams running circa 330 BHP. High capacity alloy radiator, full flow oil filter system and oil cooler. It is fitted with DB5 type S5/325 5 speed gearbox and a powerlock limited slip axle with uprated halfshafts. Brakes are DB5 with 3 pot callipers by Girling and a single brake servo with adjustable brake bias. Uprated springs with anti-roll bar and gas competition dampers front and rear. Fitted with 6 x 15 “Cobra” type wheels and Avon ZZR tyres. Large capacity alloy fuel tank with competition fuel pumps. In 2013 the car had a full bare metal respray at a cost of £26,000.
