1977 BMW E3 3.3LIA

£89,995 | Location: United Kingdom

Model History:

The BMW ‘New Six’ was a range of luxury cars built from 1968. It was BMW’s first post-war attempt at the executive six-cylinder market, and came in two different body styles – the four-door saloon with internal name E3 and the two-door coupe E9.

The shape of the car allowed for more passenger space and comfort than on previous BMW saloons, particularly for the occupants of the front seats. It was also the first BMW to feature the now-iconic twin front headlights set into the grille, as well as being supplied with an all-new independent suspension set-up.

The first ‘New Six’  models were the 2.5L and the 2.8L which, apart from the larger engine, had bigger tyres, self-levelling suspension and limited slip differential. Both models were well received by the public and press, and praised particularly for their excellent acceleration and impressive fuel economy.

In 1971 a range of 3-litre models was launched, including long wheel base and fuel injection versions. Finally, a  long wheel base 3.3, with carburetor power plant, 3295 cc engine and capacious leg room, was launched in 1974, soon followed by a fuel-injected version.

In total, around 190,000 E3s rolled off the production line, until the model was replaced by the E23 7 Series in 1978.

Only 222 RHD 3.3 Li a were produced between 10/1975 and 02/1977 of which just 5 remain currently registered with the DVLA today and only 2 registered on the road.

Power sunroof, PAS, Leather interior, Front fog lights, Air Conditioning, Power passenger mirror, Power windows, Rear Reading lights, Heated rear screen, Dash clock, FM/AM Radio, Manual Radio antenna.

The rare 3.3Li Sports limousine is finished in a pristine coat of Anthracite metallic that is close on flawless. Incredibly expensive when new with few built they were a scarce sight in the 70s and almost non existent today.

This example has spent its time inside as evident from the condition of the body and detailed history file with correspondence from its past 3 owners and as such avoided the fate of many 70s BMW. Incredibly this car has never had any welding or suffered from corrosion issues and remains in original condition throughout.

We have no doubt that this is the worlds best RHD 3.3Lia in existence today and an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire such a rare and collectable part of BMWs history in such original condition.

The black leather interior is mark free and the leather still soft and supple, never replaced or reconolised. All the dash lights work, the radio crackles into life as it should and the air conditioning still blows ice cold with the power sunroof still in perfect operation for those wanting a bit of sunshine. The condition is quite unbelievable and complemented by the original Coco mats.

The boot is immaculate, with all the fragile plastic trim covers in good order. The spare wheel (14inch), jack and wrench all sit neatly in the spare wheel well. The full tool kit is present although sporting green handles rather than the original red items which were stolen during a house burglary in the hands of owner number 2 (all documented).

Engine & Transmission:

The straight 6 3.3L engine is in perfect working order. The car had undergone extensive recommissioning 3 years ago as it came out of 30 years of storage and has since visited further specialists and BMW dealers to ensure maintenance is up to date.

The car drives impeccably and has visited shows and members meets over the last 3 years, on many occasions the star attracting considerable interest from fans and collectors alike.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes:

This 3.3Li is fitted with highly sought after genuine 16 Inch staggered Alpina wheels that have been refurbished and wrapped in excellent new michelin tyres. The original 14 inch wheels are included in the sale and again are in pristine condition still with some period Michelin XWX tyres.

Calipers, discs and pads have all been replaced within the last 2k miles and as such remain in excellent order. The twin right hand drive brake servos also recently rebuilt.

History File:

Chassis 3070205 was manufactured on 18th January 1977 and delivered to the UK importer, BMW concessionaires GB Ltd, on 26th January 1977. It wears its original colour Anthracite Grey Metallic, paint code 055 as confirmed by BMW archives.

DVLA records show it was initially allocated to Blue Bell Garage (Wilmslow) Limited, Cheshire which now trades under Halliwell Jones BMW however it was later transferred to Rydale cars in the West Midlands who were the selling agents and did just that, first registering the car on 1st May 1977, registration mark ROA 750R, the original plates are still with the car with Rydale cars stamped on them.

The first owner was GKN Group services ltd and this sports limousine was just one of its chauffeur driven cars to transport the then group chairman Sir Barrie Heath.

On the 22nd October 1980 Tony Gladwin purchased the BMW from a Rover dealer in Redditch called P J Evens, The BMW came with a 3 month guarantee which is on file along with its dealer sticker. The mileage at the date of purchase was 30,900. Ownership was much enjoyed for the 3 years where the car then covered most of its further mileage up to 1983 at 61,899 miles. As a company car came into favour the BMW was used less and less and eventually found its way onto axle stands in a heated garage and stood from 1991 until 2013 at which point due to a kitchen extension encroaching on garage space the car was sold and found its way to us.

In excellent original condition already the car was carefully recommissioned by our BMW technician of 30 years and sold to its 3rd owner Mr David Davies at 62,904 miles who has further improved its mechanical condition and enjoyed showing the car at BMW events and the NEC motor show where the car has been hugely admired by fans and collectors alike.

Having had limited paperwork Mr Davies has further compiled a fantastic history file having made direct contact with Mr Gladwin, the DVLA and BMW archives which makes for fascinating reading and opens the door to verify and understand how this very special Lia has stood the test of time and now remains as the best RHD example in existence.
